To broaden horizons. To see from the perspective of others. To experience the universality of food, music, religion, jewelry, art, play, friendship. To share a moment with others. To practice patience.
A year of travel for our family of six (kids 6-11) from our home in Oregon (USA).

For weeks, maybe months, we've been looking forward to this day. For the last week or two, Henry has been suffering serious emotional difficulty in a state of anticipation. Now, at about 7:30am, after flying for 17 hours, our friends from Portland landed in Singapore.
Ali and Cate impatiently waiting to cross the street to see their friend, Anya.
Reunited and it feels so good!
We spent the afternoon together at their extraordinary rooftop pool, enduring the scowls of childfree couples of various ages and sometimes incurring the lifeguard's whistle. By we, by the way, I mean the kids. Elise and I were busy having grown up conversations with fellow adults!
The ten of us barely fit in an elevator. Our noise definitely didn't.
Looking good after transpacific travel.
Later in the afternoon we took a river cruise to see some of Singapore's highlights, especially notable buildings, from water-level.
Melanie, Owen and the Marina Sands
Smiling because our kids don't care about us (for the moment)

Singapore looks quite a bit like Chicago, we think
I missed the explanation of this fountain's significance, sorry.
I don't know how they were still awake on the day after a 17 hour flight but we ate dinner - the adults in the restaurant, the kids in the room upstairs while watching a movie - and stumbled off to bed. There was some angst about the total rejection of having a sleepover but, as I have often told the kids, I'm a mean person.
